Planetary Climate Systems: Scientist Dr. Donald J. Wuebbles
Sat, 4 Feb 2012 21:41:30 -0800
- PLANET EARTH:OUR LOVING HOME Understanding Planetary Climate Systems: An Interview with Atmospheric Scientist Dr. Donald J. Wuebbles. Episode: 1882, Air Date: 9 November 2011. Astute viewers, welcome to Planet Earth: Our Loving Home on Supreme Master Television. This week we'll find out about the hugely damaging environmental impact of climate change with Dr. Donald J. Wuebbles, Harry E. Preble Endowed Professor in the Departments of Atmospheric Sciences and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. Dr. Wuebbles has a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of California -- Davis, USA and has authored over 400 scientific articles, most of which concern our planet's atmospheric composition and its effects on the global climate system. He is noted as the first scientist to statistically prove that stratospheric ozone was depleting in the early 1980's and was honored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 2005 with the Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award for his overall work in this area. Dr. Wuebbles was a lead author on the first and second assessment reports by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and shares in the 2007 Nobel Prize for his work with the Panel. We know that the climate is changing, that it's not just the Earth is warming; it's many other aspects that are going on; precipitation patterns are changing and other aspects and we have clear evidence that the basis for those changes is because of human activities and particularly the emissions of carbon dioxide and some other gases and particles that are in the atmosphere that are causing a forcing on the climate system that is driving that change. One serious outcome of rising global temperatures is an increase in the frequency and strength of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, floods and droughts. Well, this year (2011), actually, was the worst year on record for natural disasters in the U.S. -- over US5-billion of damages. Some of that was due to hurricanes and earthquakes and things like that. But a good part of it was because of major storms that occurred, causing flooding; for example, the Midwest and the South, near the Mississippi and other, associated rivers, wildfires occurring in the Southwest related to large temperatures that were occurring and a number of other such things. What we're thinking is, unfortunately, that kind of uncommon event is likely to become more common in the future as we look at the changing climate. We really expect increases in the severe weather as a result of climate change and that's what we're seeing. Every part of the US has seen an increase over the last 50 years. In the Midwest, that's been over a 30% increase in the top 1% of storms, so more precipitation is coming. Well, that means more flooding; in particular, it's tending to come that way in the winter and spring, so more flooding. And what we're seeing also in areas that aren't getting those increases overall in precipitation like we're seeing in the Midwest, if we go to the Southwest, for example, when they do get rain, it still tends to come as larger events than it used to, but they're not getting as much rain as they were before. And so that's why in Texas (USA) this year we had a really major problem with a really major drought. The public typically associates climate change with unnaturally hot weather, but it can also lead to very harsh, abnormally cold weather in certain regions as well. The substantial warming occurring in the Arctic is materially changing the weather patterns in other parts of the world. So we expect more warming in higher latitudes because of several important feedback processes that occur in the climate system. One is called the Ice-Albedo Feedback. What that means is as the ice in the Arctic melts you have less ice on land or less ice in the ocean. The background, what was covered with ice has less reflectivity. And that causes more absorption of sunlight and you get warmer temperatures. So what does that do? Because the temperature gradient between the Arctic and mid-latitudes is decreasing, the jet stream becomes weaker. And the net result is that large what we call "extra-tropical storms" are moving further northward. And that's tending to leave places like Texas (USA) and the Southwest and Southeast drier and so more likely to have a drought than before. But it's also part of the reason why we're seeing this increased precipitation in our area (the Midwest). At the same time, the other key factor there is that you can get more Arctic air coming down to mid-latitudes. And so in the winter, you can actually end up with colder temperatures for short periods compared to what you would have had previously. So you can end up with a large snowstorm that can drop 36 inches of snow in Washington DC (USA

STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY - Unfathomable Torture Behind Fur
Sat, 4 Feb 2012 21:41:30 -0800
- STOP ANIMAL CRUELTY Why Me? Unfathomable Torture Behind Fur. Episode: 1881, Air Date: 8 November 2011. The images in the following program are highly sensitive and may be as disturbing to viewers as they were to us. However, we have to show the truth about cruelty to animals, praying that you will help to stop it. This is the Stop Animal Cruelty series on Supreme Master Television. This week's program features excerpts from a short documentary by Mark Rissi, a film producer and the communications officer for Swiss Animal Protection, an umbrella organization comprised of 69 animal-welfare groups from Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. For 150 years Swiss Animal Protection has been at the forefront of animal advocacy, speaking for and defending our defenseless fellow beings. By conducting public awareness campaigns and working to enact animal-welfare laws, Swiss Animal Protection has prevented the suffering of countless numbers of our animal co-inhabitants. One area of special concern for the noble organization is the gruesome fur trade, much of which is conducted in China. Eighty-five percent of fur used in the fur industry is produced on horrible, filthy, utterly inhumane fur farms, where thousands of wild animals are imprisoned in tiny, barren cages. Approximately 100 million animals are in fur factory farms worldwide. Mink, Raccoon Dogs, Red and Arctic Foxes and Rex Rabbits are just some of the many animal species kept under absolutely appalling conditions. Having no social interaction or mental stimulation, the animals, which are used to roaming great distances in their native habitats, become immensely frustrated and go insane. In addition, inadequate food, water and shelter from extreme weather conditions causes agony to the helpless beings, often leading to horrific injuries and disease. What's even more unbelievable is the manner in which these innocent ones are killed. In 2005, a group of Swiss Animal Protection investigators traveled to China to uncover the truth about how fur is produced, and what they discovered is truly shocking. The following documentary film, entitled "Fun Fur?" is based on the group's findings and provides insights into the abhorrent fur trade. Is it real or is it fake fur? The (fur)industry calls it "fun fur." In the last few years China has become the world's largest exporter of fur clothing and according to the industry sources, the biggest fur production and processing base in the world. It is also a country without any legal provisions for animal welfare; and correspondingly, it has a poor track record. We have an animal wildlife protection law just to protect rare animals, rare species which have economic value. We treat them as natural resources; but we don't have any protection or welfare laws about animals. The Chinese law, wildlife protection law, doesn't protect wildlife in captivity. It only protects wildlife in the wild. And the law only protects against actions causing death to wild animals in the wild. But if you torture an animal, short of death, you are not prosecutable. Chinese customs statistics indicate a net volume of fur exports of nearly US billion in 2004, and Zhang Shuhua, deputy chairman of the China Leather Industry Association, told reporters that fur exports were up 123% year over year from 2003. More than 95% of fur clothing produced in China is sold to overseas markets, exported to Europe, the US, Russia and Japan. According to the Sandy Parker report, China exported a staggering US.2 million in fur trimmings to the US in the month of January 2005 alone. Our team set out to examine the situation on location. We chose Hebei Province, as this province plays a major role in the retail market. Many small companies take part in the processing of fur. On the streets of Liou Shih and Shangcun, you find people washing pelts, stretching or drying them. The pelts are dyed, sheared, or even knitted, and the consequences to the environment are grave. Environmental protection regulations are minimal in China. Highly toxic chemicals are used to tan or color the pelts. Because of the lack of stringent legislation, many western countries are exporting their pelts to be processed in China. Our investigators went to document various fur farms in the Hebei Province. What they found would shock even the most seasoned observers. They uncovered and documented unimaginable acts of systematic brutality and animal cruelty on a colossal scale. A Chinese fox farm. The animals are kept in single battery cages on a surface of just 54 square centimeters. There are no objects to play with. One cage row is located right next to the other. Our film team visited various farms containing between 500 and 6000 animals. A farm with raccoon dogs. China breeds and raises approximately 1.5 million raccoon dogs per year for the fur industry. Raccoon dogs have great d

"Vegucated" -- Vegan Filmmaker Marisa Miller Wolfson
Sat, 4 Feb 2012 21:41:30 -0800
- HEALTHY LIVING "Vegucated" -- Journeying to Health with Vegan Filmmaker Marisa Miller Wolfson. Episode: 1880, Air Date: 7 November 2011. Marisa Miller Wolfson is the director, writer, and editor of "Vegucated," an exciting, humorous, and informative new documentary released in fall 2011. Part sociological experiment and part adventure comedy, this must-see film accompanies three ordinary people as they switch from a meat- to a plant-based diet for six weeks and transform their lives forever. They say you are what you eat. I love kosher hotdogs with all the trimmings. Philly cheese steak. And these three people are about to find out who they are. Meat lasagna. More meat. Some cream cheese. It's a rack of lamb. There's so much meat in here. And what they're made of. Have you ever tried to lessen your intake before? I have. I've tried to switch to chicken. And that's about as far as I go, I suppose. The challenge? To go vegan: no meat, no dairy, no animal products of any kind for six weeks. No meat! "Vegucated" tells a story of three meat and cheese lovers who go vegan for six weeks, and we track their process on tape. So we capture all of their reactions as they learn the truth about animal agriculture and as they discover vegan living. I used to travel around the country showing other people's documentaries. And that was so inspiring, to see people's lives changing as a result of having seen the films. And I thought, "Wouldn't it be fun to make a film where you actually see people in real time going from bacon-cheeseburger lovers to thinking, "Oh my gosh, vegan is the right way to be." We didn't know, when we just had three volunteers, if it would really work. But it did. I mean, they all had really eye-opening experiences, and they are really funny. And that was one goal I had, was to make a really entertaining, funny film that people would actually enjoy watching while they're learning. Another source of inspiration for the film was the 2004 documentary "Super Size Me," in which filmmaker Morgan Spurlock tried a month-long diet on only meat-based fast food to examine the industry's health impacts. I was sitting in "Super Size Me" and I thought, "You know, okay, we're seeing what not to eat. Wouldn't it be interesting to see what we should be eating?" Also, Morgan Spurlock detoxed on a vegan diet at the end, after his binge. His girlfriend at the time, Alex Jamieson, put him on a vegan diet to make him healthy. And I thought, "Wouldn't it be great to actually see burger- eating Americans detox on a vegan diet?" And that was the spark for the concept of the film. The stars of "Vegucated" are three likable New Yorkers: a 22-year-old college student Tesla Lobo, bachelor Brian Flegel who always eats out, and a psychiatrist/stand- up comic and single mom named Ellen Mausner who is concerned about her family's history of heart disease, whose primary cause is a meat diet. Marisa Wolfson herself is the narrator and vegan tour guide who leads them in their exploration of a plant-powered world. I think what this film shows is that you can take anybody from any walk of life really, you show them the truth about what goes on, you show them alternatives that are easy and accessible and delicious and fun, and everyone can be part of this solution to some of the world's most serious challenges. "Vegucated" presents not only health, but also environmental and ethical issues of food. We're looking for foods that have more nutrients and less calories. Why should we die unnecessarily of heart attacks, strokes and cancer if you don't have to? Healthy food, wealthy food. Not a single picture of a cow. This is what we've been talking about, your flaxseed meal. Good for you. But there's more to learn than just what's inside the grocery store. And this lesson is harder to swallow. Oh my God, this is disgusting. There's no way that anyone could talk around what we just saw, or explain it away. We were meat eaters like three weeks ago, having no problem eating a bacon cheeseburger deluxe. And now we don't even care about getting arrested. That's crazy. I know that I'm certainly caught up in the emotional aspect. But I'm trying to be as rational as possible. It raises a lot of questions. We're digging more graves with our fork than anything else, and it's not just our grave. We're digging the grave of the future. How can you walk away not feeling a little bit like you have to re-evaluate some things? In "Vegucated," Ellen, Tesla, and Brian visit factory farms and a farm sanctuary, which undoubtedly change their perspectives. They also learn from a variety of respected experts. One of them is the meat- free advocating physician and bestselling author Dr. Joel Fuhrman and one of his former

Humor and Humanity: Comedian Dick Gregory - P2/2
Sat, 4 Feb 2012 21:41:30 -0800
- VEGETARIAN ELITE Humor and Humanity: Comedian and Activist Dick Gregory - P2/2. Episode: 1878, Air Date: 5 November 2011. On August 11, 2011, a great comedian and one of the foremost champions of civil rights addressed an audience on the stages of Chicago, Illinois, USA. Understand that we have the power to change this planet. Mr. Dick Gregory's stand-up comedy performance followed the live videoconference "World Vegan World Peace: A Conscious Choice" with Supreme Master Ching Hai as the Guest of Honor. We have the power to change it. And so, in our meditation, as we sit through the meditation, think about, not the hungry people starving, but see them getting up with smiles on their faces, and understand that there's a love out here that can turn this whole piece around. That's our job, but you can't do it with fear. It's love, love, love, and being lovable. And so as I sit here and say to Supreme Master, thank you, thank you for being here. First, we've always thought this was a men's job. We always thought, well, the men will come and save it. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Human beings have no sex, have no race, when love sits in. Welcome back faithful viewers to the second installment of our two-part series on Vegetarian Elite featuring Mr. Dick Gregory -- a professional comedian with a career spanning five decades, a long-standing human rights advocate, bestselling author, anti-drug crusader, and expert nutritionist. With his resilient spirit, he has overcome poverty, racial injustice, and cancer. He has participated in over 100 fasts and prayer vigils to raise awareness about human rights and world hunger. As we found out in part one, Mr. Gregory also has a fervent desire to share his fascinating discoveries about where our foods come from and what they do to our bodies. He has been credited for introducing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s son to vegetarianism who then went on to influence his mother, Coretta Scott King, to become a vegan. Mr. Gregory also practices what he preaches. Instead of lamenting and bowing to traditional treatment when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2001, he went public and helped millions of fans around the globe realize that with a proper lifestyle, cancer is in fact curable. Let's return now to our insightful interview with Mr. Gregory to learn more about his holistic philosophy. Well, 99% of my diet is fruit, ripe fruit, nothing in the can. One day, I'll eat nothing but grapes. Another day, I'll eat nothing but cantaloupes. Another day, I'll eat nothing but berries And so basically, I don't like eating. I can go forever without eating. And about twice a year, I'll do a 40-day water fast; about three times a year, I'll do a 12-day fast with nothing, just breathing. When you do that, you cannot be moving around, you can't be doing any physical fitness, and that's when you start communicating. I use it in America where we have more folks die from overeating than under-eating. (Yes.) And then when you go on a fast, even people that don't agree what you're fed, every time you sit down and eat, they think about when they get hungry they eat, and so that's what I use it for, although that's a violation to use a fast for anything other than purifying (I see.) yourself and your consciousness. One of the turning points of human health is when we turn to the ancient tradition of detoxing our bodies of all the unwanted substances found in our food and air. Mr. Gregory's advises on the subject. So when you start detoxifying, increase the water intake. And then there's different things out here, different herbs and stuff, different fruits and stuff that you can eat, vegetables that you can eat to help detoxify the body. When I went on my first fast, I could taste stuff that I ate when I was five years old, (Yes.) candies and gum and stuff. (Yes.) And so that's the first thing you do. Two, when you really get into detoxification, you're nature's operating table, better be still. Well, in our society I can't take off from work; well when you do that, the minute you get off, you go and rest. We think we can do the same thing that we're doing and you can't, the body is purifying. You've got 75 trillion cells that are being detoxified at the same time. It comes out, the poison. You see, 85% of the poison in your body comes out through your feet because of gravity pull. (Yes.) And so people who work, walking, they should change their shoes three times a day. Athletes should never put on that same pair of tennies because all those impurities that stayed in them move back up into the body. And so in detoxification, take foot baths. But don't get in the tub, take foot baths, because with gravity pull, it pulls it out. Walk in the sand if it's available. Because if you see people sand blast a house, all at once it becomes white and all the dirt is gone,

Cost of Choosing Animal Products: Depletion of Mother Earth
Sat, 4 Feb 2012 21:41:30 -0800
- PLANET EARTH:OUR LOVING HOME The True Cost of Choosing Animal Products: Depletion of Mother Earth. Episode: 1875, Air Date: 2 November 2011. Greetings, green-minded viewers, to this week's episode of Planet Earth: Our Loving Home featuring an interview with Dr. Richard Oppenlander, a vegan, on how animal agriculture is destroying our planet. Dr. Oppenlander is an American environmentalist, wellness advocate and dentist who over the last four decades has studied the effects of food choices on the environment and human health. He is also the president and founder of an organic vegan food production and education business as well as the co-founder of an animal rescue and sanctuary. His research findings show that animal product production and consumption is severely harming our well-being and decimating our world by causing the substantial global loss of land, freshwater, clean air, food supply, biodiversity and energy resources at a frighteningly rapid pace. As the author of "Comfortably Unaware: Global depletion and food responsibility... What you choose to eat is killing our planet," he has appeared on radio shows and written articles for newspapers and magazines to raise awareness of conscious eating. We're losing our global resources at an unprecedented rate. We are producing 70-billion or more animals each year and it's growing in exponential fashion. That number is a bit difficult to pin down, because on any given day, there will be, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 1.7-trillion chickens in the world and one- to two-trillion fish in the world that are on their way sooner or later to slaughter. So, it's a massive number and all of our resources are being deployed for this purpose. So in the other direction, we're using all these resources and all of our energies to produce essentially food to create animals. It's really not even food, it's animals that we're creating. And then we're eating those and the end result is we're eating something that's unhealthy for us too. So it's sort of a two-bladed sword that we're dealing with right now. If we just did away with all that unnecessary loss of resources, it would obviously be better for our health. Meat production is inherently inefficient compared to growing plants for food. Vast tracts of tropical rainforests are destroyed annually to create space for livestock grazing and cultivating crops for livestock feed. According to a United Nations Environment Programme report, animal agriculture-related activities take up 38% of our planet's land. Producing animal products also consumes huge volumes of water. For example a person uses up to 15,000 liters of water per day for a meat-based diet, which is 15-times as much water as a vegan would use. Water itself is the largest concern of any scientist that is studying where we're going in our future. We are running out of land, of course, but we're expected to deplete our water systems by 40% in just the next 19 years. So if we didn't use the water for all of the aspects of animal agriculture, we certainly could be applying it more frugally to our own use right now. They're concerned about water scarcity, when in reality, it's more about water management. Instead of technologies, we need to start looking at choices. Instead of choosing to eat animal products, which uses massive amounts of water, we could be using water just to sustain ourselves. If you use your acre to grow grass-fed livestock, one acre isn't normally enough. You would need 5, 10 even up to 20 acres in most land in the world. And when you do that, after two and a half years, which is what it would take to grow one grass- fed cow, you would essentially end up with about 480 pounds of that type of animal product that people are calling food. In the course of that 2 ½ years, you would create or produce about three to four tons of methane and carbon dioxide. And you would also use minimally 20- to 30,000 gallons of water. Minimally, that's what they would drink. But in most cases, they would use about a million to two-million gallons of water because of all the alfalfa or other aspects of water use that they would need to use to even irrigate the land to produce grasses for them to eat. Whereas if you use that same acre of land to produce something like a kale-and-quinoa combination, you would have the equivalent on average after 2 ½ years of about 15,000 pounds of food produced. If you slithered off 1/8 of an acre, and you threw in some hydroponics, you could grow about 30,000 pounds of tomatoes during that 2 ½-year period of time.
